St Cuthberts Church -link to the Birley memorial in Kirkham

If you visited before I have decided to put the servicemen's graves at St Cuthbert's separately. However this set of pictures are related to Kirkham and Wrea Green - the Birley family. This link goes back to the Birley memorial in the Kirkham Parish church graveyard. It considerably helped in "decoding" the information on the Birley memorial. Hopefully it helps in nailing some of the links that Birley researchers needed to establish.

This is the cross in context. I am standing behind the North-West corner of the church,
roughly facing south. The building behind is the community hall attached (not physically)  to St Cuthbert,s church. The memorial cross relating to the fallen from the congregation is at the front of this building. The road that is front of the church and the community hall is the "back road from Lytham to Blackpool. This road also has the Cross dedicated to St Cuthbert.

Not often I consider a page closed but unless someone can come up with more information to add...

Kirkham War Memorial

This war memorial is not in the town centre, it is set inside fairly large grounds which give it a sort of amphitheatre feel to it. About 400 yards from the Parish Church along a fenced with farmland on one side of the walkway. Grassed and gardens on the other. There are terraces above which lead out to Kirkham's main street. The walkway continues to more houses. The photographs make a better description. I haven’t completed the transcription - for WW2 (tomorrow!)

From the terraces, There are two sets of stairs.

The Fylde farmland, Inskip and other smaller villages are this way.

Kirkham Parish Church - St Michael's

Kirkham literally means church town. It seems that history tells us that there has been a place of Christian worship in Kirkham for 1400 years. The Romans came to Kirkham before then - it would be safe to assume that they also worshipped here.
The church of St Michael is off the main street. It is set in quite extensive grounds with an attached graveyard as well as an extended graveyard. Kirkham War memorial is quite close by. There are some very interesting plaques, memorials and dedications within the church. These will be mentioned towards the bottom of the page.

The Birley Memorial - Kirkham Parish church

This is in the memorials blog. Seems faintly out of place as most of the memorials relate to the fallen in the twentieth century wars. I will try and decode this memorial, much of the dressed stone has chipped or cracked away. Hopefully many of the names at least will still be visible. There is a datastore page here where there are more pictures. These have been used to attempt to decipher the the memorial as well as Ancestry
This is the grandest object in the churchyard by the church. The Birley family had land and influence in this area for generations. Built in the mid 19C initially commemorating William Birley the founder of Kirkham Linen Mill. There is further information relating to Wrea Green and the Birley family here.

Seems this has quite a lot of further research before I can complete the transcriptions. Quite a place Kirkham. Done more on the 13/12/12

Kirkham Catholic church

As you drive from Blackpool to Preston along Preston New Road, there is a turn at a roundabout to Kirkham. On your left is Kirkham Grammar School, then there is the Catholic church. There is a memorial by the church and across the road is a nother graveyard with servicemen's memorial stones. There is also an imposing cross which seems to be dedicated to one of the former incumbents.

The church of St John the evangelist is a design by Pugin, a grade 2 listed building and was erected in 1845. Formally known as the Willows. The church has a good website - loads of good info here. It will certainly fill in information about the names I have highlighted.

The names are getting difficult to read at the bottom of the memorial. The letters are in lead.
They seem to have faded, thinned out and become less legible.

Tricky translation, Seems to say, please correct me because some of the letters are damaged, disappeared or illegible,

"PRAY FOR THE SOUL OF REV T. BILLINGTON
AND FOR JESUS AND ALL THE FAITHFUL THAT ARE  BURIED IN THIS CEMETERY"

I think that is a fair translation.

The servicemen’s graves are in different places in the graveyard.
There is not a designated area
