Bolton Corporation Sewage Department

Believed to be the only Roll of honour of its kind! This also is in the same corridor as the other memorials in Bolton Town Hall.

"The Bolton Corporation Sewage Department Roll of Honour for World War One honours 12 sewage department employees, two of whom were killed in the course of duty. It was displayed at a waste water treatment works in Ringley Fold, Bolton.
The memorial was donated to Bolton Museum and Archive Service in 2004." quote from the Bolton Museum website.

This memorial is a World War I paper roll of honour for the ‘Bolton Corporation Sewage Department’. The roll of honour has pen and ink illustrations and is glazed in an oak frame. Photographs accompany the names of those commemorated.
It is in the possession of Bolton Museum & Archive Service and is to be displayed in Bolton Town Hall.
War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £68 for improvements to the glazing of the memorial. The memorial was fitted with laminated safety glass that has a 99% UV filter. This means that the roll of honour will be protected from UV rays and the fading of the detailing on the memorial as this fading is already evident. This glass will also mean that the memorial and members of the public will be protected if the glass were to be broken.

Bolton Co-operative Society Memorial

This memorial is situated on the same corridor as the Temperance Memorial.
It has recently been restored and placed back on display. I used lots of flash, but it is very dark stained wood.

Bolton Co-operative Society First World War and Second World War Memorial.

"This memorial was displayed at the secretarial office of the Bolton Co-op Society on Bridge Street in Bolton town centre. It was unveiled in 1921. When the office was closed, the memorial was donated to Bolton Museum

The memorial names 37 Co-op members who were killed in the First World War. The memorial was later updated to honour 9 Co-op members who were killed during the Second World War. This was done by turning around the central board and carving a new inscription. The original inscription is still on the reverse of the memorial. It states that 386 Bolton Co-op members returned from active service in the First World War.

The Co-op is a business owned and run by its members. The members each get a share of the profit or dividend.

Bolton Grand Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance

That is a very grand title for quite possibly one of the best looking Rolls of Honour.

It is currently on display in Bolton Town Hall. I was on the search for it. I enquired at Bolton Town Hall if I could see it. I was taken really seriously by the head of security and taken upstairs to where the Mayor has his parlour. In the corridor there are several plaques and displays. He even gave me a book about past mayors as well as a guided tour. It has been renovated by the War Memorials Trust to a very high standard. Here are the pictures.

The bottom of the scroll has the words.

A wonderfully illustrated piece of work. It seems that W. A. Kelsall produced quite a few of these paper and card rolls. He may well have been the framer too. This memorial appears to have been exceptionally well kept and cherished. Info suggests that it may have hung in a local Temperance office and them passed to the local museum on closure.
