Greengates is a small suburban area to the North-East of Bradford. I passed here on the way back to Preston from Shipley. Took a detour to avoid heavy traffic. However small the town of Greengates, it has a beautifully maintained memorial and garden. There is more information here. At the bottom of this post is a list of the fallen. The unveiling was carried out by Lt Col Alderman Anthony Gadie on the 5th of November 1921.
I have to assume that the name plates on the memorial are replacements. These are just too clean to be original. Click on an image to enlarge it. Here are the photos that were taken:
Below is the list of the fallen: there are more details on the Greengates website.
Serjeant HORACE GOODAIRE
Gunner GERSHOM SHUTTLEWORTH
Driver WILLIAM DAWSON WHITFIELD KENNARD

It seems that Pte Rhodes name was omitted from the memorial originally. After a campaign by the family his name is carved there (1999) |

Harry Rhodes name is carved at the bottom of the memorial not cast as the others are.
This information is derived from the Commonwealth War Graves Commision.
There is plenty of information. Many of the names above could be traced from here.
The name panels on the Greengates war memorial are plastic replacements. The bronze originals were stolen several years ago. Sadly, the Roebuck pub is no more. The site is now an access/carpark for frozen food shop, making the adjoining crossroads more hazardous than it previously was.
ReplyDeleteMy Grandfather was born in the Roebuck, and his father was the landlord for over 30 years. he was succeeded by his son in law. I have researched all the men listed as Great war casualties on the memorial and am always happy to share information.
