Commonwealth War Graves, Harrogate

I visited Harrogate because I wanted to photograph the memorials in St Peter's church.
However on my way back to Wetherby I stopped off at the Commonwealth War Graves at Stonefall cemetery - it is just off the main Wetherby road, past the Great Yorkshire show-ground, and then first left. This brings you to the back entrance, considerably quieter and probably better parking. Stonefall is a large cemetery and the War graves are almost separate from the rest of the cemetery. I was very impressed by the quiet and content feel - it was almost deserted and everything was spick and span. I photographed the graves and left via the main gates on the Wetherby road. The photographs are below. further work shortly!

Bolton Corporation Sewage Department

Believed to be the only Roll of honour of its kind! This also is in the same corridor as the other memorials in Bolton Town Hall.

"The Bolton Corporation Sewage Department Roll of Honour for World War One honours 12 sewage department employees, two of whom were killed in the course of duty. It was displayed at a waste water treatment works in Ringley Fold, Bolton.
The memorial was donated to Bolton Museum and Archive Service in 2004." quote from the Bolton Museum website.

This memorial is a World War I paper roll of honour for the ‘Bolton Corporation Sewage Department’. The roll of honour has pen and ink illustrations and is glazed in an oak frame. Photographs accompany the names of those commemorated.
It is in the possession of Bolton Museum & Archive Service and is to be displayed in Bolton Town Hall.
War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £68 for improvements to the glazing of the memorial. The memorial was fitted with laminated safety glass that has a 99% UV filter. This means that the roll of honour will be protected from UV rays and the fading of the detailing on the memorial as this fading is already evident. This glass will also mean that the memorial and members of the public will be protected if the glass were to be broken.

Bolton Co-operative Society Memorial

This memorial is situated on the same corridor as the Temperance Memorial.
It has recently been restored and placed back on display. I used lots of flash, but it is very dark stained wood.

Bolton Co-operative Society First World War and Second World War Memorial.

"This memorial was displayed at the secretarial office of the Bolton Co-op Society on Bridge Street in Bolton town centre. It was unveiled in 1921. When the office was closed, the memorial was donated to Bolton Museum

The memorial names 37 Co-op members who were killed in the First World War. The memorial was later updated to honour 9 Co-op members who were killed during the Second World War. This was done by turning around the central board and carving a new inscription. The original inscription is still on the reverse of the memorial. It states that 386 Bolton Co-op members returned from active service in the First World War.

The Co-op is a business owned and run by its members. The members each get a share of the profit or dividend.

Gisburn War Memorial

Gisburn is situated on the A59 from Preston and heads towards Skipton. Gisburn is a market town, you will see the cattle pens as you enter the village.

The memorial is situated at the corner on a slight hill overlooking the crossroads. Should you turn right from Preston you will find a cattle trough too. However the memorial is made of Aberdeen granite, crafted by J Lees and sons. It was unveiled by Lord Ribblesdale on the 16th of April 1921.

From the rear again, the road to the right goes to Nelson
where the troughs are.
Between the houses is the main road and the village proper.

This rock is close by. there are quite a few trees!
Everything here is nicely tended and looked after.

Bolton Grand Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance

That is a very grand title for quite possibly one of the best looking Rolls of Honour.

It is currently on display in Bolton Town Hall. I was on the search for it. I enquired at Bolton Town Hall if I could see it. I was taken really seriously by the head of security and taken upstairs to where the Mayor has his parlour. In the corridor there are several plaques and displays. He even gave me a book about past mayors as well as a guided tour. It has been renovated by the War Memorials Trust to a very high standard. Here are the pictures.

A wonderfully illustrated piece of work. It seems that W. A. Kelsall produced quite a few of these paper and card rolls. He may well have been the framer too. This memorial appears to have been exceptionally well kept and cherished. Info suggests that it may have hung in a local Temperance office and them passed to the local museum on closure.

A magnificent piece of work!

Greenmount Congregational Church memorial

Some things remain invisible! I lived there, travelled past countless times, but never knew this existed. It is however cared for and now the names of these fallen can be shown. A corner of the church yard has been cut off and this area with a seat has been made there.

 It looks fairly ramshackle and although in public view - and obviously thought about with the wreaths. Just not cared for enough! Sorry Greenmount!

Definitely a better shot. The road heads straight upwards to the "Finger Post"
Then branches left to Hawkshaw and right to Helmshore or Ramsbottom
The seat is facing the Bull. The sign points down Brandlesome Road towards Bury, but passing the old School, crossing the old railway bridge the cricket ground and Nabbs House.

Not sure which Lomax street this refers to but Fred Lomax is buried/cremated in this graveyard.
