The Kenwyn Memorial and Church Roll of Honour

This is the Kenwyn war memorial, situated on the B3284, the road north from Truro. It is situated at the junction of Kenwyn Hill and Knights hill. If you turn right from along Knights hill it will take you to Kenwyn Church, which has some rather unusual features. They are highlighted in the Kenwyn Datastore blogsite here. The stone memorial is situated at the junction and the roll of honour as well as the list of vicars is displayed in the church.

This is a picture from my old churches database

The inscription on the memorial are inlaid in lead. However time has caused some of the inscriptions to become indistinct and some have disappeared.

Although the Roll of Honour and the memorial serve different purposes it is unclear on the roll of honour who fell, and those who returned.

Set in the corner of Kenwyn hill and Knights Hill, at a bend in the road.

The road on the right disappears down to Truro.
The town centre sigh goes to Kenwyn, but actually leads to the church.

St Thomas' Church, St Annes

Attended a the christening of my granddaughter at this church, Coincidently really close to where I used to live. I suspect the names of these fallen could also be on the St Annes and Lytham memorials. But I am not sure. This memorial is quite well hidden on the right hand side of the aisle in a dark side of the church. The first image is of the memorial, the others are pictures of the church. The church tower is a financial liability, there is always a possibility that it may have to be demolished. I will publish more pictures of the memorial in due course.

The memorial on the South wall.
White marble with a brass plate, only mentions
those who fell in the Great War

 The inscription below reads:

St Nicholas, Marton

Not to be confused with West Marton, which is on the A59 road.
Marton is firmly in the middle of rural Blackpool. St Nicholas is maybe 300 to 400 yards from what we locals call the back road between Lytham and Blackpool. School Road is the road that runs between the junction of Common Edge Road and eventually Preston New Road and the M55. It can get extremely busy in the morning. I occasionally go down School Lane.
The original school was on Division lane a parallel road approximately 800 yards due south. There is more to be found on the school's excellent website here. I suspect I will update the photos in time.

The front of the school viewed from School road
heading inland from Common Edge road.
The porch is a main entrance.
The memorial can be seen clearly on the left

The school as a memorial site is quite unusual though. It is the only school in the area that has the memorial actually outside and connected to the church. Definately a vibrant and thriving school. The memorial has recently been refurbished by "Ted Edwards" Stonemason. tHERE SEEMS TO BE A SISTER MEMORIAL NEARBY ALSO REFURBISHED BY THE SAME MAN. Although the description on the UKNIWM site suggests that it is in a wooden surround. The photographs suggest a sandstone surround around a granite face.

Greengates Cenotaph and Memorial garden

Greengates is a small suburban area to the North-East of Bradford. I passed here on the way back to Preston from Shipley. Took a detour to avoid heavy traffic. However small the town of Greengates, it has a beautifully maintained memorial and garden. There is more information here. At the bottom of this post is a list of the fallen. The unveiling was carried out by Lt Col Alderman Anthony Gadie on the 5th of November 1921.
I have to assume that the name plates on the memorial are replacements. These are just too clean to be original. Click on an image to enlarge it. Here are the photos that were taken:

It seems that Pte Rhodes name was omitted from the memorial originally.
After a campaign by the family his name is carved there (1999)

View from the Roebuck pub - they let me park - A good pie!

Singleton Church Memorials

I visited Singleton on the way to Poulton. A fascinating place. I took photographs inside the church of other dedications as well as the memorials. One of the most interesting objects was the remains of a pedestal belonging to a wayside cross - possibly. The link is here There are links to other pictures of the church here.

However these are the memorials to the fallen in World War 1 and World War 2. They are facing the entrance door as you enter.

Both the plaques are of brass, both the same size and they have laurel wreaths with crosses in the middle. The middle section appears to be of oak, aged an of a window shape inscribed in gold leaf. " IN EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE" Little shelf beneath, for flowers or possibly candles.

These memorials are mentioned in the United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials as UKNIWM Ref: 10571

There will be a link to the rest of the memorabilia and dedications here. As well as more pictures of this interesting little community church.

John Talbot Clifton Memorial Drinking Fountain

To the left of the Ballam road just to the left of the bridge as you leave Lytham is a curious little monument. I believe this was once called Sparrow parkThis is the Drinking Fountain Memorial to John Talbot Clifton erected about 1882 by his wife Lady Eleanor Cecily Clifton. This was originally sited in what is now the place of the Lytham War Memorial in Hastings Place.
The Drinking Fountain is slightly to the left of centre. Not sure of the date of this picture but it must have been before 1922 ish, because the War Memorial was erected about this time on this place. If you examine the picture closely you will see that little has changed. Stringers is still in the same place. The tram tracks are clearly visible, The rest of the iron work is still there too.

I do not know when the water fountain was moved but it certainly now has an air of neglect. Slates are loose or lost. The odd bit of graffiti. Seems a shame that all this appeal to save Lytham Hall does not seem to have spread to this unique memorial. There is a reference to the Late Colonel Clifton here.
