There are 24 Polish graves in Layton Cemetery. We salute your brave deeds and the the honour and dignity which you show. Hopefully I have the spellings correct and would wish that you download any images. Comments appreciated. There are other War Memorials and graves in this cemetery - these pictures were taken on a raw January morning. This is a work in progress. I will update as I can read the gravestones and make the links. Any comments and information - and of course links in posts respectfully received. Please use any photos! I have larger prints should you need them. This is a link to the Sacred Heart church in Blackpool. There is a plaque in the church that refers to these airmen.

ReplyDeletePolish pilots Józef Armanowski, Lt. Stanislaw Gąsak and RAF Radio Observer P/O Lynn F. Hobbs formed the crew of 1454 RAF Night Fighter Squadron (1454 Flight). On 26 January 1942, while flying between RAF Colerne and Charmy Down bases, their Havoc I (AW395) aircraft corkscrewed for unknown reasons and crashed at Box, Wiltshire.

I am looking for information and especially a photograph of Sgt Grzegorz Piotr Gramiak who trained at Blackpool and who was killed in August 1942 in an air crash off Anglesey. His body was in the water for nearly 9 weeks and he washed ashore in Blackpool in late October 1942. He was buried in Layton Cemetery but his body was exhumed and sent home in 1950. His grave is still there, empty and unmarked. If anyone can help, please contact me on nevillebougourd@gmail.com
